 PERSONAL STATEMENT

Several years ago my mother hung a sign in our home.  The sign was Luke 12:48 – “to whom much has been given, much will be expected.”  I see that quote as the Lafayette ideal.  It manifests itself in the individual who, being fortunate themself, turns back to serve others.  Entering college I wanted to have an impact, but I didn’t understand my motivation.  Looking back on my time, I realize that my work was for the benefit of our community.

I doubt many students understand or know of my work on campus – few are excited by development and alumni relations.  During my time at Lafayette I served on the Student Alumni Council, the Alumni Association Board, and two Trustee Committees.  There I worked on projects to raise money for financial aid, renovate residence halls, construct new campus spaces, and organize alumni relations events.

The most unique challenge I faced came with the Student Affairs Committee, where we sought an alternative to student evaluations.  We navigated a complex issue racked with challenges to find a helpful alternative, keeping the best interest of students in mind throughout.  We expect a solution to be implemented this semester.

My proudest moment was removing all financial requirements for joining Delta Tau Delta, where I served as President for two years.  It was a decision that made us more equitable, welcoming, and accessible, winning us a Hoff Award in the process.  To my knowledge, we are the only FSL organization with such a policy.

I have come to realize that service is the greatest effort we can engage in.  My work on campus has been for the betterment of our community, and I hope I left it better than I found it.  The Lafayette ideal is not elusive – if we live in service to one another we will surely attain it.
