300 Word Statement

Lafayette students are often considered successful by their long lists of impressive accomplishments, which are likely the results of determination, ingenuity and intellect. However, I think “Lafayette ideals” are differentiated simply by the way they choose to carry themselves every day.

In the classroom, Lafayette ideals are intellectually curious and excited to learn. By their enthusiastic contributions, they encourage their peers to want to participate. They have the emotional intelligence to collaborate with others and the desire to truly listen to other perspectives. They excel in academics without needing to compete with another’s success, and lead without seeking power or praise.

Off campus, a Lafayette ideal knows he or she represents Lafayette, and takes that responsibility seriously. A Lafayette ideal is seen both professionally as a sharp mind and articulate speaker, and socially as a kind and postive presence.

As I reflect on my last four years, I hope my professors and peers would say that I’ve demonstrated these attributes, brought curiosity and excitement into the classroom, and will continue to represent Lafayette well everywhere I go. I hope they would say I have always been authentic, genuinely caring for the Lafayette community, and that I have brought joy to those around me. I believe that how you make others feel about themselves says a lot about who you are.
